Codewhale
Open-source Rust terminal coding agent that works with any provider or model.
Codewhale is an open-source coding agent for the terminal, written in Rust. Given a task, it reads the repository, edits files and runs commands until the task is done or it needs input from the user. It ships with more than 40 built-in providers and uses DeepSeek V4.1 Flash by default. It also runs against local models, and uses Ollama automatically when no provider is configured. A /receipts command lists the files it changed, the commands it ran and the web and MCP calls it made. Prebuilt binaries cover Linux, macOS and Windows on x64 and arm64. It also installs through npm, Cargo, winget and Nix.
Pros & cons
Each point cites its sources and says what kind of evidence backs it. A second reviewer tried to refute every claim before it was kept.
Pros
- DocsMIT and free with no account; supports 40+ providers, any OpenAI-compatible endpoint, and local Ollama/vLLM/SGLang models.[1]
- DocsPer-turn cost and model inspection (`/cost`, `/turn inspect`), plus `/undo` that reverts a whole request including file edits.[1]
- DocsRuns commands in an OS sandbox (Seatbelt on macOS, bubblewrap on Linux) that blocks reading credential stores like ~/.ssh and .env.[1]
- User reportsReal users run it alongside Codex and OpenCode as a supplementary agent.[1]
Cons
- DocsTelemetry is on by default (aggregate counts with a rotating install ID) and has to be turned off explicitly.[1]
- DocsNo OS sandbox on Windows, and Full Access mode disables the sandbox entirely.[1]
- User reportsUsers report the engine freezing mid-run without an error, and conversation history being lost.[1][2]
- MetadataPre-1.0 (v0.10.2), with a large TUI decomposition refactor in progress.[1][2]
- DocsDefaults to DeepSeek Flash, so out-of-the-box quality depends on that provider unless you change it.[1]
- Best for
- Terminal users who want a free, provider-agnostic Rust coding agent with cost visibility and an undo button.
- Watch out for
- Turn off telemetry if needed, and avoid relying on the sandbox on Windows.
