UI-TARS Desktop / Agent TARS
ByteDance's open multimodal agent stack: Agent TARS CLI/Web UI and the UI-TARS desktop GUI agent.
TARS is ByteDance's open-source multimodal AI agent stack, and the repository ships two projects. Agent TARS is a general multimodal agent that brings GUI-agent and vision abilities to the terminal, computer, browser and product. It runs through a CLI and a Web UI and connects to real-world MCP tools. UI-TARS Desktop is a desktop app that provides a native GUI agent based on the UI-TARS model. It ships local and remote computer operators as well as browser operators.
Pros & cons
Each point cites its sources and says what kind of evidence backs it. A second reviewer tried to refute every claim before it was kept.
Pros
- DocsAn open-source (Apache-2.0) computer-use stack paired with ByteDance's open UI-TARS vision-language models.[1][2]
- DocsAgent TARS ships both a headful Web UI and a headless server/CLI mode, with streaming output for multiple tools.[1]
- DocsRemote Computer and Remote Browser operators were released free in v0.2.0.[1]
- MetadataA large footprint: about 39k stars, with the npm CLI published under @agent-tars/cli.[1]
Cons
- User reportsUnreliable GUI actions: the most-discussed open bug is 'Missing clicks'.[1]
- User reportsAgent TARS v0.3.0 crashes on Windows with a TypeError, and `@dir:` references duplicate the whole workspace into context.[1][2]
- MetadataSlow cadence: v0.3.1 (2026-10-08) came almost a year after v0.3.0 (Nov 2025), and the repo has about 500 open issues and PRs.[1][2]
- Best for
- Experimenting with open-weight computer-use and browser agents on the desktop.
- Watch out for
- Click reliability and Windows stability; don't run it unattended on real accounts.
