CLIProxyAPI is an MIT-licensed Go proxy server. It exposes OpenAI-, Gemini-, Claude-, Codex- and Grok-compatible API endpoints backed by CLI agent accounts, with OAuth login for OpenAI Codex, Claude Code and Grok Build. It supports streaming and WebSocket responses, function calling, multimodal input, and round-robin load balancing across multiple accounts per provider. It can also use OpenAI-compatible upstreams such as OpenRouter. A reusable Go SDK lets other tools embed the proxy, and EasyCLIProxyAPI is a separate desktop client for it.

Pros & cons

Each point cites its sources and says what kind of evidence backs it. A second reviewer tried to refute every claim before it was kept.

Pros

  • DocsExposes CLI subscriptions such as Codex, Claude Code, Gemini/Antigravity, Grok and Devin as OpenAI-, Gemini- and Claude-compatible API endpoints.[1]
  • DocsSupports several CLI accounts behind one local endpoint, plus the EasyCLIProxyAPI desktop GUI.[1]
  • MetadataMIT-licensed Go project with about 57k stars, 8.7k forks, and commits as of 2026-10-29.[1]

Cons

  • User reportsRouting consumer subscriptions this way can breach provider terms: one user reports Google blocked three accounts at once, and others report Google detecting the proxy.[1]
  • User reportsUsers have repeatedly hit 429 and "resource exhausted" errors through the proxy despite having quota left.[1][2]
  • User reportsA 150-comment thread reports Codex-authenticated GPT sessions freezing without a response.[1]
  • User reportsAn open, 54-comment thread titled "could it be any harder to use?!" points to setup and usability pain, and much discussion is Chinese-only.[1]
Best for
Individual developers experimenting with routing their existing CLI subscriptions into other tools.
Watch out for
Account bans are a real risk; do not use it with accounts or subscriptions you cannot afford to lose.
