agent-browser
Fast native Rust browser-automation CLI for AI agents.
agent-browser is a Vercel Labs browser-automation CLI built for AI agents, implemented as a native Rust binary. It downloads Chrome for Testing on first run and exposes commands agents can call from a shell, including a snapshot command that returns the page's accessibility tree with element refs for subsequent actions. It installs via npm, Homebrew or Cargo, can be pinned as a project dependency, and is distributed as a skill on skills.sh.
Pros & cons
Each point cites its sources and says what kind of evidence backs it. A second reviewer tried to refute every claim before it was kept.
Pros
- User reportsAgents drive the browser through a CLI instead of an MCP server; one user found it faster than Playwright MCP.[1][2]
- DocsOffers semantic locators (e.g. `find role button`), accessibility-tree snapshots with element refs and agent-readable text extraction alongside CSS selectors.[1]
- DocsInstalls a pinned Chrome for Testing build with one command, and can also attach to an existing Chrome, Brave or Playwright browser.[1]
- MetadataReleased very often under Apache-2.0 (v0.41.0 on 2026-10-29), with about 44.8k stars.[1]
Cons
- User reportsThere is no stealth mode; a feature request to add one has been open since Jan 2026, so sites with bot protection can flag it easily.[1]
- User reportsUsers report orphaned headless Chrome helper processes spinning at high CPU.[1]
- User reportsReusing a logged-in session and running in the background without stealing focus are still open feature requests.[1][2]
- User reportsPackaging and output bugs: the Homebrew build serves a 'Dashboard not built' stub, and plain-text `errors` output drops messages.[1][2]
- Best for
- Coding agents that need quick, scriptable browser control from the shell without the token overhead of an MCP server.
- Watch out for
- Sites with bot protection, and leftover Chrome processes on long-running hosts.
