OpenManus
Open, invite-free general-purpose agent from the MetaGPT team.
OpenManus is an open-source general-purpose agent framework created by members of the MetaGPT team as an open alternative to Manus; its first prototype was built in three hours. It is a Python project installed via conda or uv, and starts Browser Use's CLI as a default MCP server for browser tools, with optional Browser Use Cloud remote browsers. The team also maintains OpenManus-RL, a companion project for reinforcement-learning-based tuning of LLM agents developed with UIUC researchers.
Pros & cons

Pros
Cons
- MetadataThe last tagged release is v0.3.0 from April 2025, so there is no recent stable version to pin.[1]
- User reportsA HN user who tried it in Dec 2025 said it 'does not work at the moment' and called its launch an attention-grabbing gimmick.[1]
- DocsIts own README calls it 'a simple implementation'.[1]
- User reportsA commenter names OpenManus among Chinese repos that inflate stars early, so popularity may overstate maturity.[1]
- Best for
- Experimenting with or teaching the architecture of a Manus-style general agent.
- Watch out for
- Expect prototype-level reliability and sparse releases; do not rely on it for unattended work.
